Bitter Gulfs a 20' wide watercolor by Walton Ford
Last night my Friday-night-magazines-in-bed routine revealed something amazing! I had flipped thru my May issue of Elle Decor, but last night was my second-round visit where I actually read and study the details.
The article titled "Dealer's Choice" (on pg 176 for any fellow Elle Decor subscribers) featured a loft designed by Eric Hughes (photographed by William Waldron) and in the shot of the media room there was a huge painting [I'm at home and don't have a scanner... but I will scan for you on Monday]... at first glance I though "Audubon?", but then I looked closer and thought "no... not Audubon, what is this?". I read the caption at the bottom of the page and then grabbed my laptop to google this Walton Ford guy. What I found made my heart skip a beat. Where have I been?
After reading, reading, and reading some more I found his book {Panacha Tantra} on the Taschen Press website... and then this video tour of his studio... the rear view mirror... absolutely genius. I want to meet this guy. I want that 20' albatross painting. I'm not sure I have a 20' wall in my house... but this painting would be addition-to-the-house worthy (I hope my husband's not reading).
More images from his book:
And more info from PBS - the videos here are GREAT! Where have I been, seriously? I guess I get too caught up watching junk-tv like Wife-Swap or The Bachelor to actually check out PBS once in awhile. They have a series called “Art:21–Art in the Twenty-First Century” and Walton Ford was featured in Season 2. I am going to have to buy the DVDs...
Has anyone seen Walton Ford's work in person? There was an exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum last year... anyone go? I'd love to know more about this "Nature Boy"... I'm honestly going to buy the dvds... I'll give a review after I watch them!
He was also featured in Men's Vogue "Walton Ford: An artist built Ford tough"
photo credit - Martin Schoeller../ who BTW, has an insanely cool book called Close Up also seen here.
Happy Saturday!

I have long been a fan of his work. His intensity shows in his work.
Incredible. Go ahead and build that addition, good enough reason to buy a Ford or better yet, what about the garage?

Walton Ford is absolutely brilliant.
His use of water color as his medium for these life sized paintings is just mind blowing. The realistic detail and the thought provoking layers provided in each painting makes his art all the more meaningful for me personally. I am the type of person that needs an understandstanding or background of the artwork I personally hang in my home. This guy fits the bill in all the ways but one...sigh, my wallet.
I love how he talks about his Artistic Evolution. It will be interesting to see what direction his future work goes in.

Wow, very educational. Thanks for sharing this. I tried watching the video on your post, but it said, "this video is no longer available."
A talented artist indeed.

Blake and I just watched the video on your post and we were both inspired. Blake said, "My favorite picture was the tiger, but I really think he should clean up his studio." LOL. Thanks so much for sharing!

Where can I buy wallets to hold 6"x4"x photographs like what you would
get from a photo lab when they develop your photos. I want to buy them
online ideally. I live and need to find a source in the UK.

You claim that there is a disconnect between savings and investment. That may occur in monetary terms, but not in capital terms. This does not imply that a commensurate amount of capital is siting idle. It instead means that those whose cash is not idle have a greater purchasing power. Thanks

Great news topic I feel very bad when I heard this news. How such type of incidents happen in airlines only. Why the have not taken proper measures to stop such nonsense event. A quick question, if you want to participate in your challenges, do we have to use Prima products ... I don't have any yet, and sure would like to play along for a chance to win some...?

This is a good article. I agree, if there is a method of saving costs then I am all for it. The last place I would have thought to notice a disease was in the eyes.

Just found your site after googling walton ford. I just went to his show at the Louisiana Museum here in Denmark and was ASTOUNDED. His work is amazing in person--online doesn't do it justice. The scale, the intense colors, the slightly off Audbon look was delicious. Thanks for providing so much information!
