I received an email last week from Brooke. I really couldn't believe what the email had to say.
Two cute girls (sisters Brooke and Brittany above), with a heart for stray shelter dogs plan to drive 33 dogs in a van from Alabama to New Hampshire in an effort to save those dogs lives!!!
That's right. Here's the info straight from their blog:
Because of the strict spay and neuter laws in New Hampshire most of their shelters actually have a shortage of adoptable dogs. What a great problem to have! So, volunteers (that would be us) drive 19-23 hours with 33 dogs in a van from the overcrowded Shelby County Humane Society here in Alabama to a partner shelter in New Hampshire. From what we have learned, all the dogs are typically adopted within a matter of days! We are both a little nervous but most of all excited about this awesome journey. The trip costs $750-$850 which is usually paid for by donations to the Shelby County Humane Society. But, we really want to try to raise all or some of the money ourselves.
It only takes $50 to sponsor a dog! Penelope & Paisley are each going to sponsor a dog... I hope if you have a heart for dogs that you'll check out their website, watch the videos and consider sponsoring too!? If you can't contribute financially, well they are also gonna need music for the road - maybe you can make them a mix tape? I can think of some appropriate songs... Bow-Wow-Wow-Yippee-Yo... "Woof" by Snoop Dogg, okay so that's all I can think of, but I know there are others.
The joy that my rescued dogs have brought to my life can't be put into words in a silly blog post, but I will tell you that they are the most grateful and loving creatures ever! I would hate to think where they would be today had a rescue not taken them in and cared for them until I adopted them.
You can donate via PAYPAL on One Dog At A Time blog... or if you wish to send the funds direct to the Shelby County Humane Society, you can donate via Paypal on their site too, or send a check to the address below. Just be sure to note on the check or in a note: for Brittany & Brooke's Shelter Partner Adventure

What a great idea! I have met Brooke before through a mutual friend and had no idea they were doing this. I'm off to donate- thanks for letting us know about this!

Those girls will, no doubt, have great Karma for the rest of their lives! What a wonderful and selfless deed they are doing! And being a rescued Mommy as well, I know how many people they are bringing joy to by their efforts. Thanks for passing along E!
And how can I resist "Who Let the Dogs Out?" or "Gone to the Dogs" (KT Tunstall). OK that's all I got. xx

I am officially charmed. Things I love about this:
a) They're from good 'ole Alabama.
b) It involves shelter pups. (My Molly is from a shelter in Elmore County that we pass on the way to the lake).
Mind if I beg a favor while I'm here? Redoing our bath in Old Cloverdale bungalow. Any non-trade resources for faucets that you'd recommend? I know it's another subject that makes your heart skip a beat. :)

Thanks for devoting a blog post to dogs! As a fellow dog (and animal) lover, I applaud you for highlighting the good work being done on behalf of these shelter dogs. May they all find wonderful and loving homes!

Haha Darby, we totally thought about the Today show, we've just got to figure out how to make it happen! It is Brittany's dream to sit beside Matt Lauer!
We plan on posting tons of photos of the van and all the dogs.

This is SO awesome!! I love this and, as you know, rescues are really close to my heart. I brought Paco home with me from Puerto Rico, where there are tons of animals in need. These two girls are amazing for doing this.

What huge hearts these girls have! They are so inspirational. Thanks for sharing... (I TRULY believe that people's souls are shown through how they treat animals, their pets and the helpless.)

I'm a rescue transporter, too. I drive as many weekends as I can, but usually as part of an organized relay. This is very common. If you'd like to get involved, go to Yahoo Groups and search for "rescue transport" or "pet transport" and your state. There are lists for regions and also for highways (so, there's one for I-95 that includes people from up and down the east, for example).
It only takes 2-3 hours each time you take a leg of a trip! It's an easy way to get involved with rescue work!
Here's a news story that I was in last summer about rescue transports: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8nhdHCkzCA

what a job to take on! their story is so inspiring. I too have a rescue dog, a miniature schnauzer who was dropped off at the shelter when his former owners' medical bills kept increasing. A girl adopted him and said after 3 days that he "didn't like her"--- which I am grateful for because now he's ours!

You got me. Hook line and sinker.

What a great idea to help these dogs. We've adopted all three dogs we've ever had and they give so much back to us. Wouldn't do it any other way.
